The Ria Formosa National Park, one of Europe's most important wetland areas and a maze of canals, islands, marshes and barrier islands stretching 60kms along the Algarve coast, is on our doorstep. It can provide some very exciting fishing, especially if you appreciate ‘the flats.’ The main species to be found here, of interest to anglers, are sea bass and mullet.

Within an hour of Fuseta there are a number of reservoirs and dams, known in Portuguese as barragems, which hold excellent stocks of largemouth bass, carp and barbel that will gladly take a well presented lure or fly. From our boat you can find yourself up in the shallows amongst the weed beds with their varying structures, actively looking for your quarry or moving out into 50 meters of water and relying on the latest electronics to find the bait schools; the predators are never too far away.

The Guadiana river is only a half-hour drive from Fuseta.  The lower reaches border Spain and it is tidal all the way up to Mertola, 60 kms from the mouth.  The Guadiana holds some exceptional fish. At the mouth a true giant can be found, corvina (jewfish, mulloway, cob), that can grow to more than 50kgs and take a lure; sea bass and blue fish can also be caught in the river. The mouth is wide, deep and powerful on the big tides. As you head upstream into the fresh water, barbel, carp and mullet become your mainstay. There are five species of barbel but the ultimate prize is the comizo that grow in excess of 15kgs.  The river is varied in the upper reaches, shallow fast sections where you can sight-fish for barbel, interspersed with slow moving, deep rocky sections where the latest on-board electronics come into their own.
