ABOUT GONE FISHING PORTUGAL
Experienced Fishing Guide
Originally from England, Gone Fishing Portugal’s owner and guide, Mark, has been passionate about fishing since he first picked up a rod aged five. Inspired by his grandad, Mark spent most weekends and summer holidays fishing the local rivers. As a young adult he fished the club match scene and then the open match scene for money.
In 1999, after a year backpacking around Australia looking for fishing heaven, Mark and partner Ali emigrated to Australia and in 2001 started Gone Fishing Cooktown; guided fishing on the Great Barrier Reef and the rivers and islands around Cape York, Far North Queensland. Gone Fishing was very successful and over the years they were involved in a number of TV shows which allowed them to meet some real fishing and Aussie outback icons including regulars on the boat, Bush Tucker Man (Les Hiddins), Ray Mears, Andrew ‘ET’ Ettinghausen and Matt Watson. In late 2018 Mark, Ali and their two teenage kids decided it was time for a change. They sold Gone Fishing Cooktown and relocated to the Eastern Algarve, in Portugal, where they started their new venture, Gone Fishing Portugal.
Anglers will benefit from Mark’s extensive knowledge, professionalism and easy going nature and from Ali’s organisation and hospitality skills.
Words from Mark's Previous Clients
We recently spent 5 fantastic days fishing with Mark in the lovely Cooktown region, We learnt heaps, had a great time and brought back lots of fish - yum! We found Mark to be very knowledgeable and extremely easy to get on with. Mark’s skills, sense of humour and knowledge of local places to eat certainly made our fishing trip a holiday we will always remember. We never met Ali but she was amazing in the booking process and communication prior to our arrival. Thanks Mark and Ali - we had an awesome holiday.

This was simply a great fishing experience. I was lucky enough to join Mark for two days fishing in late May.
Mark is a great guide with a wealth of knowledge and a great sense of humor. He was only too willing to pass on his experience in a helpfull manner and I was able to take home many new techniques to practise. The highlight was pushing right up the river on day two, casting lures into snags. This was some of the toughest and best fishing that I have done and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
Wow! Just Wow! What a memorable experience for My son Arch and I! Mark was a hoot! Great company, knowledgable and informative! We fished 3 different methods in a variety of river locations. We caught a variety of fish we've never caught before! We also saw Crocs whilst out. Just great fun! And frankly for the rest of our hols in Aus hankered to be back on the Endeavour River with a rod in our hands! Thanks again Mark for a great afternoon!
5 days of predominately Mangrove Jack fishing.. Many new techniques taught and skills developed. Was great seeing the experienced elder brother being shown up by Marks skills!!!; It was a great trip and well worth it. For the experienced fisho; a great opportunity to learn some new techniques, which Mark has refined with his knowledge of the rivers and reefs of Cooktown. Now to get Mark to PNG to see him get smashed up on Black Bass... Revenge Mark! Great Guide o a beautiful river system...
